February 5, 2024.

Some of the canyons leading through the Pajarito Plateau into the Jemez are still accessible, though none of them are really easy to get to. They take hiking or jeeping. Some of the canyons we used to visit are now much harder to reach due to fires, flooding, and changes in land ownership and access policies. Along the southeast side, the land is owned by various pueblos – Jemez, Zia, Santa Ana, Kewa, Cochiti, and San Felipe. These lands are generally not freely accessible to the public.

Cabezon Peak is more accessible than it was ages ago, but the climb is close enough to technical that I have never been compelled to climb it.

<a href="https://www.w5pny.com/wp-content/gallery/cabezon-flight-feb-2024/IMG_1426.jpg"
title="The mighty Rio Grande is looking mighty shallow! This canyon used to be accessible, through the Dixon Apple Orchard and up the bottom on a dirt road. There are summer homes up this canyon. I think they are still there, some of them, but I don't know how the owners access their property. You can see a dirt road along the mesa; that was the best access from Los Alamos. It crosses Cochiti Tribal land, and is now blocked at the boundary so you can no longer go that way. The apple orchard was flooded after the fire and traded by NM to the Cochiti Tribe in exchange for a parcel of land in Santa Fe. It used to be forested with a perennial stream that had fish in it. It was beautiful.
